Sunday 1 November 2026

In October 2026 I saw 11 seadragons over my 5 dives with a total of 32 encounters and an average of just over 6 per dive.

October was not a great month for me and diving. I was unwell for the whole month which stopped me from doing early dives and it was too rough to dive on a number of days. I also missed a dive on the 24th because the park was closed for a triathlon event.

All 11 seadragons that I saw in October I had seen before so there were no new dragons. In fact the 11 that I saw I had seen in August and September so it is good for some stability.

I only did one dive at The Leap during the month and was not able to find "Veronica" or "Denis" despite looking carefully.

Kurnell Seadragon Encounters - September 2026

Missing Seadragons

I was not able to find "Veronica" or "Denis" on my one dive at The Leap. I suspect that "Denis" should have a brood by now and so perhaps he was hiding. I have missed "Veronica" before so she may still be around. I had planned more dives at The Leap during the month but had to cancel them due to being unwell.

New Seadragons

I saw no new seadragons in October.

Males With Broods

"Randy"

I saw "Randy" on all 5 dives through October. He started the month with his second brood of the season and only had remnants on the 11th.

Remnants of Randy's second brood on 11 October

When I saw him on the 17th he had no eggs. He was in the vicinity of his normal hangout area and "Robin" (the female from the courtship for his previous brood in August) was nearby.

Randy with no brood on 17 October

Sure enough when I saw him on the next day, he had a brand new brood; his third brood of the season.

Randy's brood on 18 October

As his third brood of the season started on 17 or 18 October and they last around 6 weeks, the brood should be finished around the end of November or the start of December, meaning he still has time for a fourth brood before the end of the season in February next year. "Dudley" is the only other male I've seen with four broods in a season.

"Hervé"

"Hervé" started the month with his first brood of the season in full swing and it was covered in algae on 11 October.

By my last dive in October, "Hervé" only had remnants of his brood remaining.

I expect him to have his second brood of the season when I see him next.

"Charlie"

"Charlie" had still had his second brood throughout October. By the 21st (my last dive of the month) it was covered in algae.

As his second brood started around 13 September, I expect it to be done by now and he'll either have no brood or a new brood next time I see him.

"Ricardo"

I only saw "Ricardo" once in October on the 11th, the only time I went to The Monument. His brood looked fairly new making it his second brood of the season.

"Denis"

I didn't see "Denis" on my only dive at The Leap for the month so I don't know if he has a brood yet. Hopefully, I'll get to see him in November.

Upcoming Months

I'm still unwell as I write this but hope to be well enough to get a few dives in during November and see all my seadragons.
